Our History
Chelsea Green Shoe Repairs has been trading from it Elystan Street address since 1973 when it was founded by Mr. Sid Dunning. Initially Sid, his wife and his children were all employed in the shop, working the counter, keeping the books and cobbling the shoes. The business concentrated on Shoe and Boot Repairs – covering all aspects of the shoe repair trade – as well as a key cutting service. The patching and stitching of shoes was hand done by Sid himself, using traditional methods. These methods were passed down to Sid from his many years working alongside cobblers from all around London.
When Mr. Dunning, originally purchased the Elystan Street address, the shop only sold sport products such as plimsolls, darts and football kits. However, it wasn’t long before Mr. Dunning realised the potential in adding a Shoe Repair Service.
Over the years the shoe care business developed, gathering a loyal following amongst the local residents. This allowed Sid the chance to focus purely on shoes. Choosing to concentrate on a few things done to the highest standards.
It was in 1980 that Matthew Childs began working as an apprentice at Chelsea Green. After many years honing his skills, he completed his training and set up shops in Sydney street, Chelsea and then the New Kings Road, Fulham, where he ran successfull businesses before finally getting to purchace his the Chelsea Green Shop
Over the years, Matthew added services such as an engraving service, a wide range of watch straps and batteries and a full shoe care range.
The one thing that has stayed constant throughout Chelsea Green’s history is attention to detail. Each pair of shoes is treated with respect, keeping with traditions passed down from tradesman to tradesman.
